Les Sapins - l'Auvergne
Ian and Helen Gale's Auvergnat farmhouse is in a very beautiful setting on the hills above the market town of Ambert. They have worked extremely hard to make it a comfortable place in which to stay and learn: France does have IKEA and the 4 twin-bedded rooms with en suite shower and WC are simply and comfortably furnished and kept spotlessly clean. Helen does the cooking using local produce and it's plentiful and wholesome, washed down with local wine. The only little criticism I had was that the desserts were a bit on the heavy side.
I went there with two friends, Melanie and Sheri, in May 2001 for a week's course with the Gale's delightful tutor, Anne-Marie. She sent us a little test to do before we arrived and based her lessons, which were held each morning, on our abilities.
We had some excursions with her and we did her shopping in the marvellous weekly market in Ambert. They produce a fabulous cheese called Forme d'Ambert in the area - blue and pungent, it doesn't travel well, but cooks beautifully.
We also had some free time in the afternoons so we took ourselves off to Vichy, which is a beautiful and interesting town, and to a fabulous chateau whose furniture escaped confiscation by the Germans because it was so secluded. A car is essential, and it's a very pleasant drive from Lyons.
This was a great way to spend a week in France. Some formal lessons, and then lots of free time to go out and use the newly acquired knowledge.
