Back in April 1969 I took myself off to Gandria, a small, carless village on Lago di Lugano. I stayed at the Ristorante Antico, owned by the Bartolini family - Luciano, his wife Marta and their 6-year old son, Sandro. 38 years later, in July 2007, I went back - partly because my friends Gavin and Birgit Palmer had invited me to join them in their 25th Wedding Anniversary celebrations, and partly because I wanted to thank the Bartolinis for being so kind to me all those years ago.
