Open University course L120 - Level 1 - 30 points
"Ouverture"
This was my first foray into the world of the Open University. The course fell into two parts: "Cadences" and "Valeurs" and all the materials fit nicely into a foolscap box file. Each part consisted of:
- 4 x textbooks
- 2 x Activities cassettes
- 1 x Video tape
- 1 x Tape transcipt book
- 1 x Listening Assessment cassette
- 1 x Features cassette
Our tutor, Pauline Ferry, held tutorials at the Friends House on the Marylebone Road or at the Euston Centre. We had:
- 4 x evening tutorials
- 3 x Saturday schools
We were assessed at the end of the 2nd, 4th and 6th months by a written and a recorded assignment and at the end of the course we had to submit a written assignment and we underwent a "live" presentation and oral discussion in groups of four with our tutor. The oral was terrifying!
Very early on in the course I started a study group with five women from my tutor group and two others joined us later. We met every Sunday afternoon and worked through the material together, pooling our knowledge, watching videos and sharing our frustrations and problems. Four of us: Kate, Sue, Rosemary and I continued to meet throughout 2002 even though only Sue was doing a French course (L221), and we'll be studying L211 together next year when Kate C. and Emily will be coming back while Sue moves on to L210.
It was an enjoyable course and lifted my flunked 'O' Level to 'A' Level standard (without all the literature!) The material was a bit dated, but I believe the next presentation will be all new.
